I decided to try to make watercolor pencils work for me, although I did add a little white acrylic paint at the end to blot out parts that looked too filled in.

Jan. 12: A most hopeful giraffe, and knowing when to stop

I painted this little guy while listening to President Obama's State of the Union speech. I think he looks rather hopeful. I couldn't find my black paint, so I used a very dark purple. I was looking around for the actual name of that color (purple dioxazine!) when I stumbled on this Acrylic Painting for Dummies cheat sheet, It turns out that I did a good thing, totally by accident, when I didn't use the black paint for this. I'm happy with the result. I gave him a bottom lip, which, when you look at the original photo , you can't see. In the photo, it makes perfect sense; his actual face is longer and pointier. But when I painted him, that nose and mouth area turned out rounder (I seem to have that problem ... making things rounder than they are). Jan. 7, Fable: The goat that wanted to be a bird

As promised, I am supplying you with the photo I was using as I painted this. I want you to look at it, as it is a goat in a field of poppies . That is what I was trying to paint, and somehow it became this. No goat, no poppies. Sometimes, the heart wants what the heart wants, but the paintbrush wants something else altogether.

Enjoying the fruits of my watercolor labors

There are things I like about this fruity little piece, and there are things that make me cringey. I will start with the cringe factor: The peach was way smaller than that, and the bananas were larger. Does this say something psychological about me? I don't know. I could have done a better job with the shadow. There was surely more of it than that on the table. The bowl did not actually have a blue rim, but I am just not that good at depicting the white edge of something. I need more practice. Instead of a bowl on a table, this may look like fruit in a little white bathtub, floating on a teal sea. If that is what you think, I am sorry. I apologize. There is a reason for this. The table was a boring pale brown and I am a color addict. So I changed the color of the table. And this bowl was in the middle of the table, not near the edge. I gave it a horizon.
