Jan. 17: How round, brown owl?

I have always loved close-ups of faces. When I worked in newspapers and sometimes had the ability to choose how tightly to crop a photo, I always wanted to go in as tightly as possible on that face. Maybe it's the perceived eye contact that I find compelling. I still feel that way about faces … human or animal. So when I was casting about for something to paint, I stumbled on an owl closeup. Once again, I made the face a little too round. This is a tendency I am going to have to fight. I try to round all the edges, instead of letting things be as they sometimes are: angular and sharp. I think maybe I do that in life, too.
